Working Days
We were able to train, deconstruct, reclaim, salvage and transport in record time.

Built in 1903 by John S. Pillsbury for his son Alfred and wife, the Pillsbury Castle reflects the legacy of Minnesota’s “Father of the University of Minnesota,” eighth governor, and influential entrepreneur. The Pillsbury family shaped Minnesota’s business, political, and philanthropic landscape, with deep ties to lumber, iron ore, and community institutions.

Deconstruction

In just 10 days, Birch Group completed the deconstruction of the historic Pillsbury Castle, while simultaneously training three deconstructors from Summit Academy. These trainees, who balanced both online and hands-on instruction from our Deconstruction Academy, have since graduated from the 20 week Deconstruction Technician program and are now official Deconstructors. Together, we carefully reclaimed alabaster chandeliers, birch, maple, and oak flooring, along with countless architectural treasures. Over 70% of what we salvaged never even reached our store, finding new homes immediately. This project wasn’t just deconstruction; it was true circular economy in action.

Featured Highlights.

Historic Significance
We safeguarded valuable old-growth lumber, architectural elements, and millwork that otherwise would have been lost.
Innovation in Action
By proving that deconstruction could be done at scale, we set a precedent for future grant-funded projects across Minnesota and beyond.
True Circular Economy
The reclaimed materials are now finding new life in homes, furniture, and community projects instead of being buried in a landfill or sitting idle in our store.
