“Birch Group made history as the first deconstruction company in the nation to partner with local government to secure grant funding for commercial property projects.”
Before redevelopment transformed 200 East Chestnut Street in Stillwater, Birch Group was entrusted to lead the salvage of the former Chestnut Building, originally built in 1960. Rather than see this historic structure bulldozed into a landfill, ourteam carried out a full-scale deconstruction that preserved its story, piece by piece.
This project wasn’t just about materials. It was about changing the system. Birch Group became the first in the nation to receive grant funding and establish a groundbreaking partnership with Ramsey County and Washington County to support deconstruction over demolition.
Explore the complete before-and-after story of this deconstruction project.
The Chestnut Building project represents what Birch Group stands for: deconstruct with purpose, build sustainably, and lead the way in rethinking how our communities can build better.

Redevelopment of Site
Working with Birch Group on the deconstruction of 200 Chestnut in Stillwater was an outstanding experience. Their team was professional, efficient, and committed to meeting our deliverables on time. The site was left broom-clean at the end of each day, and they went above and beyond to maintain security, ensuring no trespassers or vagrants entered the property. Their attention to detail and dedication to doing the job right gave us complete confidence throughout the process. We couldn’t have asked for a better partner.
